Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

A friend was recently discussing with me the uncomfortable situation she encountered when she dropped off her child at another friend’s home for a birthday party.  The party host was a little put off that my friend did not stay for the two hour party.  This situation brought to light a very good question–When is it appropriate to drop your child off at a party and not stay?

Out of the Box Party’s experts say it is up to the guest and their own comfort level.  We always feel it is best to let your child give you some direction in these situations.  If it is a house party and your child is comfortable at this home and you are confident that your child will be safe and well cared for, by all means drop and run.  We caution–never arrive late to pick up your child.  That is just very bad manners.

If you arrive at a birthday party where you expected to just drop and run and you notice other parents are attending the festivities, feel free to proceed with your drop off plans.  It would be our advice to arrive back at the party a little earlier than you originally anticipated.  Arriving back to the party a little earlier will help smooth out any wrinkled feathers.

But what if your child wants you to stay and the host expects you to leave?  If it is just nerves on the part of your child, help them with the transition.  Walk them over to a friend, help them start a game or activity.  Ease out gracefully with little fanfare and let your child know exactly when you will be back.  Once again, don’t be late.
